Keeping your Windows system clean from malware doesn’t always require third-party tools. Microsoft’s built-in Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) offers a quick and effective way to scan for threats — no installation needed.
Step 1: Launch the MSRT
Open the Start Menu by clicking the Start button or pressing the Windows key.
Type MRT into the search bar.
Select the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool from the search results.
If prompted, click Yes to allow the tool to make changes to your device.
Step 2: Choose Your Scan Type
In the MSRT window, click Next.
Select one of the following scan options:
Quick Scan: Checks common areas where malware typically hides.
Full Scan: Examines the entire system for malicious software.
Custom Scan: Lets you choose specific folders or drives to scan.
For a comprehensive check, choose Full Scan and click Next to begin.
Step 3: Review the Results
After the scan completes, MSRT will display a summary of its findings.
If threats are detected, the tool will attempt to remove them automatically.
Review the report to see what was found and resolved.
Additional Tips
While MSRT is a useful tool for periodic checks, it’s not a substitute for real-time protection. For ongoing security, consider enabling Windows Security (Defender Antivirus) or installing a full-featured antivirus solution.
You don’t need to install MSRT separately, but if you ever need to download it manually. MSRT
