Updating your Wi-Fi network name makes it easier to identify your home connection — especially in crowded areas. Here’s a quick guide to renaming your SSID from your router’s admin panel.
Step 1: Identify Your Router’s IP Address
Open Command Prompt by typing “CMD” in the Start menu.
In the window, type:
ipconfig
and press Enter.
Look under your active network adapter for Default Gateway — this is your router’s IP address. Common examples: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
Step 2: Log In to Your Router's Admin Panel
Open a browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.).
Type the router IP address into the address bar and press Enter.
Enter your admin credentials. If unchanged, default values like admin / admin may work. You can often find these printed on a label on the router or in its manual.
Step 3: Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID)
Navigate to a tab labeled Wireless, Wi-Fi, or Network Settings.
Locate the field for your current SSID.
Type in your new desired Wi-Fi name.
Click Apply or Save. The router may restart automatically to apply the change.
Renaming your Wi-Fi network only takes a few minutes and helps personalize or secure your home network. Just be sure to reconnect your devices to the new SSID afterward.
