Securing your home network starts with a strong Wi-Fi password. In just a few steps, you can update it directly through your router’s settings — no third-party tools required.
Step 1: Locate Your Router's IP Address
Open Command Prompt (search for “CMD” in the Start menu).
Type the following and press Enter:
ipconfig
Look for Default Gateway under your active connection — this is your router’s IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Interface
Launch any web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
In the address bar, enter the router's IP address and hit Enter.
When prompted, log in using your router's credentials.
If you haven’t changed them, the defaults might be admin / admin.
These details are often printed on a label on the back of the router or in its manual.
Step 3: Find the Wi-Fi Password Settings
Navigate to a section labeled Wireless, Wi-Fi, or Network Settings.
Locate the field for your Wi-Fi password. This may be called:
Pre-shared Key
Security Key
Wireless Password
Step 4: Enter a New Secure Password
Type your new password into the field.
Aim for a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols to maximize security.
Click Apply or Save to commit the change.
Your router may reboot automatically, and your devices will need to reconnect using the new password.
Updating your Wi-Fi password is one of the easiest ways to enhance network security. Don’t forget to reconnect all your devices with the new credentials and inform family or guests as needed.
