Looking to install openSUSE from a USB drive? Here's how to easily create a bootable USB using Rufus.
To get started, you’ll need:
- A USB flash drive (8 GB or higher)
- The openSUSE ISO file
- The Rufus application
Preparing for the Process
Before proceeding, remember that the USB drive will be formatted, meaning all existing data will be erased. Be sure to back up any important files.
Downloading Rufus
Open your browser and search for Rufus.
Visit the official website and scroll down to the Download section.
Choose between Standard or Portable versions. The Portable version works without installation.
Creating the Bootable USB
Insert your USB Drive into the computer and open Rufus.
Under Device, select your USB Drive.
Under Boot Selection, click Select and choose the openSUSE ISO file.
Choose the Partition Scheme based on your target system:
- GPT for UEFI
- MBR for BIOS
The Target System will auto-adjust based on your partition scheme.
Leave the remaining settings as default and click Start.
Select the recommended options and confirm by clicking OK.
Once the process begins, wait for it to complete — and that’s it! You now have a bootable openSUSE USB ready for installation.
